What's the job
About the role
We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Quality Engineer to join our Data Engineering team. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the quality, reliability, and integrity of our data platforms and products, helping to deliver trusted, high-quality data solutions that support business decision-making.
Working closely with Data Engineers, Data Designers, Data Quality Analysts, Product Owners, and other cross-functional stakeholders, you will drive quality engineering best practices, contribute to test strategy and automation, and champion quality throughout the software development lifecycle.
You'll join a QE chapter of ~300 engineers operating across 150 squads, with structured career pathways, an internal AI-assisted testing toolkit (including a Claude-based Playwright test debugger), and a defined training/certification track for QEs moving into data engineering specialisms.
If you're looking for an exciting opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and make a real impact building better software, this is the job for you!
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain automated data quality checks across the Medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold), using dbt tests, Great Expectations (or equivalent), and custom PySpark assertions to validate accuracy, completeness, consistency, and referential integrity at each layer.
- Lead the investigation of complex quality issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive preventative actions to improve product quality and engineering practices.
- Partner with Data Engineers, Data Designers, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to define quality requirements, identify risks, and implement effective quality assurance strategies.
- Drive quality throughout the software development lifecycle by actively contributing to Agile ceremonies and promoting quality engineering best practices within the team.
- Design and maintain high-quality test documentation, including test strategies, test plans, test cases, execution reports, and test closure reports.
- Validate ETL/ELT processes built on Databricks and Apache Spark, including Delta Lake table integrity, schema evolution handling, and job-level performance regression. Own Unity Catalog-level data governance checks (lineage, access control validation, table certification status) as part of the QA sign-off process.
- Champion test automation across the GitLab CI/CD pipeline, including contract testing (Pact/PactFlow) for data API/service boundaries where applicable, and drive adoption of automated DoD validation gates ahead of production deployment.
- Keep up to date with emerging trends, tools, and best practices in Quality Engineering, test automation, and modern data platforms, sharing knowledge and mentoring other team members where appropriate.
- Contribute to and maintain the QE-to-Data-Engineering skill uplift path, including SQL / dbt / PySpark / Unity Catalog proficiency benchmarks, and mentor QEs transitioning from traditional application testing into data engineering quality roles.
What you'll bring
- Extensive experience in Quality Engineering, ideally within a Data Engineering or Big Data environment.
- Strong understanding of Quality Engineering principles, test strategy, test automation, and quality assurance best practices.
- Advanced SQL skills, including experience writing and interpreting dbt models and dbt tests (not just raw SQL validation)
- Working proficiency in Python and PySpark sufficient to write test harnesses, data validation scripts, and reconciliation checks against Spark DataFrames.
- Direct hands-on experience building pipelines on Databricks (notebooks, job orchestration, Delta Lake) - strongly preferred
- Experience designing and maintaining automated test frameworks and integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.
- Good understanding of cloud-based data platforms and modern software development practices.
- Experience working in Agile teams and collaborating effectively with cross-functional engineering and product teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex quality issues and identify root causes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to influence engineering decisions and promote quality best practices.
- A proactive mindset, strong attention to detail, and a passion for delivering high-quality, reliable software and data solutions.
- Excellent command of English (written and spoken).
