What's the job

Role Purpose: 

The Data Designer role supports the business by deciding what data should be ingested from source systems into the Enterprise Data Warehouse, and how this data should be transformed to make it suitable for consumption in reporting or other downstream systems.

The role is accountable for: analysing and documenting source systems’ data as needed to meet the business requirements; determining the method and frequency for ingesting the data into the data warehouse; defining and documenting any data mapping, harmonisation, derivations, calculations, or other transformations required to make the data easy to use by the business; ensuring that the target data model is coherent and works in conjunction with the other data models in the data warehouse.

Responsibilities: 

  • Designing data warehouse solutions driven by business demand.
  • Understanding straightforward solution requirements, working with the business to clarify them if necessary.
  • Identifying and documenting the possible data sources that may be required and analysing/profiling the data they contain; working with the source system and/or business experts to understand how the business processes create and update data.
  • Creating and maintaining logical and physical data models for the data warehouse solutions, working with the Platform Data Architect to ensure they fit with the data roadmap and principles.
  • Creating and updating source to target data mappings, defining transformations and calculations, and capturing metadata (e.g. attribute definitions, datatypes, PII classification, etc.) working with the Platform Principal Data Designer to make sure they are in line with our principles and conventions.
  • Supporting Data Engineers in the implementation of the designs.
  • Supporting Quality Engineers in the testing of the data warehouse objects.
What you'll bring

Required Skills: 

  • Intermediate-level SQL querying.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • A proactive and curious mindset.
  • A collaborative approach to work.
  • 2 years experience of working with data in data warehouses or 5 years experience working with MI/BI data.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience of data profiling.
  • Knowledge of ETL processes.
  • Understanding of data quality management.
  • Understanding of data lifecycle management.
  • Experience of working with data in Databricks.
